I have been experimenting with low-budget, high-performance builds, and these are three of the latest iterations in my quest to extract maximum fun per dollar. These are brand new builds using all new parts, and besides a trip to the Norcal Keyboard meetup, they are in new condition. The cases are hacked for Gummy Worm O-ring mount. I have been tweaking on these combinations and assembly methods for a while, and these builds contain all of the dirty tricks I've learned as well as cost-cutting efforts. They run extremely well. I am listing these at cost of parts + $50 + actual shipping.
Transparent Plastic Build - $141 plus shipping
cheap transparent plastic case chopped for gummy O-ring
Plain 60 Flex Edition PCB
FR4 half plate
KTT Roses (lubed krytox G205)
Equalz C3 stabilizers
PBT cherry profile BOW keycaps
This board is "loose and wild". It has a very bouncy feel with a lot of PCB travel. Long stem switch gives it a snappy sound. Alphas sound dramatically different from num row and mods due to the half plate and the alpha isolation from the flex cuts, but all sounds are high quality and the overall typing experience is hilariously fun. It is very unconstrained. . . if you push hard into the board, it gets louder and flexes harder which is a different vibe than a lot of heavy premium boards or boards that are filled with foam and silicone. It is comically light weight at 15.5 oz. Many people say this board punches way above its weight for feel and sound. Perfect if you need something cheap while you wait for your GB to arrive, if you need a travel board, or office keyboard. You can quite literally toss this one around but when you sit down to type or game on it, the performance is real.Walnut TOFU Build - $202.91 plus shipping \- SOLD
KBDfans walnut tofu case set up without any standoffs with gummy worm mount
Plain 60 "extra" flex edition PCB (file was edited to make 4 total flex cuts)
Delrin full plate
Felt PCB foam
Gateron Milky Cap V2 switches (lubed Krytox G205)
Durock V2 stabilizers
PBT cherry profile 9009 style keycapsThis board has a mellow thock to it with a hint of woody case resonance especially on the space bar. The softness from the 4 flex cuts in the PCB is subtle due to the full plate. The flex is present and felt, but not dramatic. The board is pretty even across the keys for a Bakeneko type mount. The sound and feel are warm and very smooth around the edges.
Aluminum A60 Build - $234.00 plus shipping
KBDfans A60 CNC aluminum case with SS weight - All standoffs hacked off for Gummy Worm mount
Plain 60 "extra" Flex edition PCB (file was edited to make 4 total flex cuts)
Delrin full plate
Felt PCB foam
KTT Roses with TX 60g 16mm springs (lubed Krytox G205)
Wuque OA stabilizers
Polyfil in case
* KBDfans cherry profile Cement Grey PBT keycaps
This board is snappy, even, and behaves like many high end aluminum boards. Softness from the PCB flex cuts is present and balances well against the snappiness and clack of the long pole switches, but the full plate contains the flex to normal levels. It is tight and well behaved in all regards with a hint of case ring at the modifiers. I did not find that residual note prominent or offensive so did not make direct efforts to tune it out of the case. There are scratches on the SS weight as detailed in timestamp
